On 9 July 2026, our partners at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy) organized the outreach event “The Human Pangenome Project for an Inclusive Genomics” as part of the FORGENOM and PANGAIA projects.
The event was held within the Outreach Lectures series, which aims to make cutting-edge scientific topics accessible not only to researchers and students, but also to the wider public interested in genomics and its societal impact.
The programme featured leading international experts in pangenomics, long-read sequencing, and large-scale genomic data analysis. The keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Benedict Paten (University of California, Santa Cruz), one of the leaders of the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium. The event also included a presentation by Dr. Luca Denti (Comenius University Bratislava), who discussed current computational challenges and advances in pangenomics.
The lecture highlighted how the Human Pangenome Project is transforming genomic research by creating more inclusive and representative genomic references, ultimately supporting the development of equitable precision medicine. By opening the event to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, the organizers fostered broader engagement with the scientific and societal implications of modern genomics.
