During the event “Gender Equality in Research - Informal Discussion”, held on February 25 at the Comenius University Science Park, we openly discussed how to improve conditions for women in science. The discussion clearly demonstrated that gender equality is not merely a formal requirement, it is a prerequisite for high-quality, inclusive, and excellent research.
Key Outcomes of the Event
Comenius University in Bratislava is actively developing systemic measures through the Commission for Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities, the implementation of its Gender Equality Plan (GEP), and a network of faculty contact persons.
The FORGENOM II project confirmed the importance of integrating the gender dimension into research excellence.
Persistent inequalities in STEM fields in Slovakia highlight the need for long-term, targeted support measures.
Programmes such as L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science, the return scheme of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and the STREAM IT project represent proven tools supporting women researchers.
Joint Recommendation of the Participants
Participants agreed that Comenius University should introduce its own return scheme for researchers returning after maternity and parental leave, following the successful model implemented by the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Such a measure would represent an important step toward removing structural barriers in career progression and strengthening equal opportunities at Slovakia’s largest university.
What Comes Next
It was recommended that this topic become one of the main agenda items of the Férová akadémia 2026 conference, taking place in May. We believe this platform provides an opportunity to move the discussion towards concrete, practical solutions.
