The international project FORGENOM II aims not only to increase research excellence at the Comenius University in Bratislava, but also to improve project management, enhance participation in international grant schemes, and develop international collaboration in research and development.

For this reason, trainers representing the FORGENOM II project – from the partner organization EMBL (Josipa Bilic Zimmermann, Margarida Figueiredo, Zsofia Gera) – have been invited to share their experience, knowledge, and know-how in project management during the first edition of the Summer School for Project Managers and Research Managers, which takes place from June 30 to July 4, 2025, in Omšenie (Trenčín District, Slovakia).

Who is the Summer School for?

  • Staff working as RMAs (Research Managers and Administrators), i.e., primarily research managers and project managers employed in Slovak public research and development institutions

  • Researchers working in Slovak public research and development institutions who wish to improve their skills in project proposal preparation

What awaits the participants?

  • Intensive, but informal hands-on training sessions

  • Group work focused on preparing a project proposal

  • Networking with colleagues from other institutions, National Contact Points for the Horizon Europe programme, staff from the Slovak Liaison Office for Research and Development in Brussels, and external speakers

What will participants learn?

  • How to work with the call text (types of calls: CSA, RIA, IA, and their impact on the Excellence and Implementation sections; what “scope” and “expected deliverables” mean and how they affect proposal writing).

  • Introduction to the proposal template and recommendations for completing it.

  • How to develop the Excellence, Impact, and Implementation sections of the proposal, including the most common evaluator comments.

  • Presentation of evaluation criteria, tips and tricks, and how to address them during proposal preparation.

  • How to prepare the Implementation section — designing the project work plan and defining work packages.

  • How to correctly define deliverables and milestones.

  • The importance of mentoring, reviewing, and pre-screening proposals before submission for evaluation.

  • How to prepare a project budget (lump sum/budget-based).

  • How to manage a project properly (post-award project management).
